My morning cup of coffee.
each day is a journey and the journey itself home - Matsuo Basho
This is the ATC I sent to the folks in my EDM ATC swap. It's a rendering of a local historical site- Ephrata Cloister . Ink & watercolor.
EDM 079- draw an ear
This elderly man was sitting in front of me. I took my time studying him. As I drew him I felt a bit self-conscious. Wondering what he'd think of me sketching him.
Another shoe. I was sitting with my boot on my knee & leaning it on the bench in front of me.
EDM#020- something "dad" My grandpa's pocket knife.
I started a new journal. The previous one was frustrating in its shoddy binding & floppy leather cover. I'm trying out a small landscape format Hand.Book instead of a moleskine. It's better than the previous one.
Behind the pool house at the park sits the baseball diamond. The bleachers are shorter than usual. I liked how the pole stood out against a background of trees.
An afternoon at the municipal pool. It's hazy, hot, & humid. She is staring off into the distance, bored with work. I don't try any fancy diving tricks when she's in this zone. (Yeah right- what diving tricks do I actually have?!)
Phyllis across the street has a laissez-faire gardening ethic. This time of the year her front porch is well hidden by the ivy a overgrown bushes.
The view from Millwood Mennonite Church early in the morning. The corn (in front of the chicken barn) is waist high; soon some sweet corn.
The scanner has shifted the colors towards yellow.
The derelict terminal of the local airport. The new airport is nice. What will they do with this old hulk?
EDM #016 favourite tool
This early 1970's lantern still works. It's a favorite camping tool.
I found this book with high-school portraits of famous people. Not sure why I chose Lionel Richey. The book was staying open to the page with his picture
EDM#008 watch
My swiss army watch. I started the circle a bit big... it didnt fit on the page.
I visited Italy for a week. I was in Venice, Florence, and Bologna. I took my travel-size watercolor kit.
In one of the side chapels of S. Croce there was a gilded crucifix. I found the detail of the feet interesting.
EDM#087- Lunch
Lunch at the gardens of the Pitti palace in Florence. Prosciutto, Fontina cheese, good bread and local wine.
EDM#024- fruit
Breakfast before driving to the airport. Can I take a banana in my carry on?
EDM#061- grouping of two
These two shells sit on the shelf by my work table. I didn't feel up to drawing them because of the curves and difficult shapes. I took it slow.
EDM#162- Newspaper
The front page of the local paper caught my eye. Clay is a small town. I still had to do a double take "Clay man set fire to his property..." An interesting headline for a sad story.
EDM#029- architectural
The facade of a local girls school (the oldest one in the US, the sign says).
I was cold & wet while sitting on their lawn. I finished up quicker than I would have wanted.
EDM #021- something vintage
The sign on this old console radio sitting on the side of the street sign said "FREE." I couldn't resist. Now it sits in the back porch Giving me music While I try to draw.
EDM#090- something with wings
I had been hearing a bird this spring, but couldn't see it. After a week or so of hearing it in the morning I was able to see it on a branch. Once I figured out it was a white-crown sparrow I started hearing & seeing them everywhere. I'm pretty sure they migrate to Pennsylvania every year. I never had notice before.
White-crowned sparrow. Watercolor
EDM#017- musical instrument
It was late at night & I was having a hard time falling asleep. Instead of playing the harmonica, I drew it.
EDM#167- Something that needs fixing
I found this broken hammer while turning the soil in my garden.
EDM#083- body of water
One of the covered bridges in the county. I bought a compact watercolor set. This was my first go at painting with watercolors in the field.
EDM#094- Spoon
Detail of my childhood Huckleberry hound spoon. Pigment liner & watercolor.
EDM#004-mug
My Tim Horton's mug. I played around with my violet watercolor tube.
EDM#036- in a museum (national gallery of art, DC)
I tend to move quickly thru museums. I decided to choose a piece and sketch it, forcing me to appreciate the art.
EDM#036- in public
I was in DC for the day, so I took my journal along. Instead of furtive sketches I was brave and sketched out in public. Among the mobs at the Lincoln memorial I was quite self-conscious as people looked over my shoulder. A teenager said to her friend "Look. A real artist." Felt a bit proud (after looking around for the real artist and finding out it was me they were talking about).
March 2008- EDM#030 chair.
Chairs are easy, cooperative subjects. I've been using pens instead of my pencils and charcoals. Not being able to erase has forced me to "let it go" and accept what comes out.
March 2008- EDM#037. My keys. (Having the EDM list has been helpful when I'm not sure what to draw)
